Brief History of Zumba

The creator of Zumba, Beto Perez came across the idea of social dance fitness in Columbia in the 90s. The dance workout has received its popularity due to the Latin dance moves that it consists of (Salsa and Samba to name a few).

Whether you are a Zumba aficionado or just a rookie at it, you might wonder how this amazing dance workout came into being. Having seen the Latin moves, you might be able to tell that it first started out somewhere in Latin America. In addition to the Latin music, other international playlists are used in a Zumba class as well, which is why, people might believe it to be originated in a different part of the world. Nonetheless, if you have started going to a Zumba class and you are already loving it then knowing about its history might help you appreciate it more.

Beto Perez – The Man Who Initiated Zumba Classes

A celebrity personal trainer, born on 15th March 1970, Alberto Beto Perez stumbled upon the idea of Zumba. Beto found out that Latin inspired music can be used to influence a fitness routine. Beto was raised by his mother in Cali, Columbia, who was a single parent. When he turned 14 years old, his mother hurt herself when a stray bullet hit her. According to sources, Beto started working three jobs to support his family at that time.

Beto was inspired to dance through movies but he didn’t have any sort of training. However, he did win a lambada contest when he was 19 years old. That is when he started working with a dance academy in Cali.

He is now, not only the Director of national Zumba Master Trainer Team but he has also worked with a lot of celebrities like Shakira and Pitbull.

How Beto discovered Zumba

One day Beto came to his fitness class and realized that he had forgotten his music tape that he uses for the classes. He chose to work with the music he had present in his car at that moment. He, somehow, happened to have only the tapes of native Colombian music, which is why, he had to work with what he had. That is the day when the revolutionary dance-fitness came into being, which now we know as Zumba.

The three Albertos

Beto was approached by Alberto Aghion and Alberto Perlman, entrepreneurs who saw a lot of potential in Zumba. That is when Zumba classes started being offered all around the globe when the three made an agreement.

2002 was the year when Aghion and Perlman signed a contact with a big infomercial company which had a big contribution in launching Zumba. Everywhere around the world, people seemed to really like this new type of dance-workout and the positive response that it got, created a need for Zumba instructors.

In 2007, the Zumba program was launched on an international level which made it possible for the people all around the world to get in shape with the help of this musical-dance-party workout.
